Measuring Length
Measure from the waterline to the tip of the nose
cm
Why Length Matters
Too Short: The nose presses against the end of the muzzle.
Too Long: The muzzle pushes into the eyes when sniffing the ground.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I still need to remove 1.5 cm when measuring length?
No. Just measure from your dog's waterline to the tip of the nose. If their chin sticks out further, measure to the end of the chin instead.
What is the waterline on a dog?
It's where the eyelid meets the eye itself and is also known as the inner rim or lower waterline.
What if the muzzle is around 1 cm too long and no size is suggested?
You can trim or flip the noseband to shorten it by about 1 cm. This helps the muzzle sit further up the dog's nose and reduce the gap at the end of the muzzle. See our How to Adjust Your Muzzle blog for help.
⚠️ Once altered, the noseband can't be returned or exchanged.

What if the muzzle is over 1 cm too long but fits width and height?
It will likely push into your dog's eyes when sniffing - we don't recommend using it.
What is a * (star) noseband?
It's the same basket, but with a wider 38 mm Biothane noseband, which can add a bit of extra length.
When should I measure to the chin instead of the nose?
If the chin sticks out further, measure to the end of the chin to avoid pressure inside the muzzle on the chin.
Where do I measure from?
Measure from the top of the nose 1.5cm in front of the eyes down to include the fullest part of the mouth. Keep the tape measure straight - don't curve it.
Should I place a toy or ball in my dog's mouth when measuring?
No. Your dog's mouth should be closed when you take the height measurement.
Should I include the jowls?
Yes, include the jowls.
Do I need to add panting space to the height measurement for the quiz?
No. Just enter your dog's raw measurement (e.g. 7 cm) - the quiz automatically adds the extra panting space needed.
I've measured my dog, but the quiz didn't suggest a size. The one I want has over 2 cm extra pant space - is it still okay?
No. More than 2 cm extra panting space means the muzzle is likely too large.
✅ Up to 2 cm extra is the most we recommend.

The muzzle I want is short by 2 cm of panting space, but the length and width fit - can I still use it?
It depends on how you'll use it:
• For short periods (training, vet visits), it may be okay.
• For longer wear (exercise, socialising, hot weather), we don't recommend reduced panting space.

My dog doesn't pant as wide as your guidelines suggest - does that matter?
Every dog is different. Think about what a full pant looks like for your dog, and choose accordingly.
Why do your muzzles have extra space underneath?
They're designed to allow dogs to eat, drink, pant fully, yawn, and vomit safely. That's why they're deeper than most muzzles. When a dog lies down, the muzzle may push up over the eyes (not into them). Most dogs are unbothered or learn to tilt their head when resting.
If I add a foam-padded noseband, how much panting space will it reduce?
About 0.5 cm or less. It's a small difference but worth considering if your dog's panting space is borderline.
Where do I measure from?
Measure straight across the top of your dog's nose to the widest point of the cheeks. The tape doesn't need to start at zero - just make sure it goes straight across to the widest point of the cheeks both sides.

Do I need to measure around the full nose (circumference)?
No - we only need the straight width, not the full wraparound.
What if my dog's width is 0.5 -2 cm wider than the width shown on the size I expected but length and height fit?
You may still be able to adjust it - check out our How to Adjust Your Muzzle blog for tips on fitting and adjustments.
