We want our dogs to see their muzzles as something positive, safe, and enjoyable — just like their lead or treat cupboard!
We can build that same joyful association through reward-based muzzle training, pairing it with things your dog already loves, like treats, games, and playtime.

That's a positive association at work, your dog has learned that those cues mean something fun is coming.
Building trust through positive reinforcement
Follow these four easy stages to help your dog feel happy and confident wearing their muzzle. From first sniff to comfortable wear, these steps outline how to use patience, play, and positive reinforcement to make muzzle training stress-free and enjoyable for both you and your dog.
✅ Stage 1: Building Positive Muzzle Associations
Start by introducing the muzzle in a stress-free way. Place the muzzle on the floor and scatter treats or toys nearby. You can even use enrichment tools like lick mats or snuffle mats if your dog doesn't have guarding issues. If your dog seems nervous, remove the straps to make it less intimidating.
Once your dog is happily interacting with the area around the muzzle, begin using a clicker or marker word to reward them for looking at or sniffing the muzzle. ⚠️ Avoid rewarding behaviours like pawing or grabbing at it.
Repeat this step several times, placing and removing the muzzle to help your dog adjust to the sounds and movement. Keep rewarding calm, curious interactions.
✅ Stage 2: Encouraging Active Engagement
Now that your dog is comfortable around the muzzle, encourage them to approach it willingly.
1. Place the muzzle on the floor.
2. Mark and reward your dog for approaching it.
3. Toss the treat a short distance away so they reset and re-approach.
Gradually increase the distance between your dog and the muzzle until they're happily walking several feet to engage. You can then start rewarding closer investigation like sniffing or nudging.
If your dog gets startled by movement or sound, slow down your training and break it into smaller steps. The goal is confidence, not speed.
✅ Stage 3: Holding the Muzzle
When your dog is confident with the muzzle on the floor, start introducing it in your hand.
Engage in play or offer treats while casually holding the muzzle — no pressure or proximity yet. This helps maintain positive feelings without adding stress.
If your dog hesitates, attach the muzzle to a stable surface (hook, stand, or baby gate) and repeat the step from a distance. Reward calm curiosity, such as looking at or sniffing the muzzle.
Then reintroduce movement by taking the muzzle away and bringing it back, marking positive interactions and tossing treats to allow re-approach opportunities.
✅ Stage 4: Desensitising to Muzzle Sounds
Some dogs may react to the noises a muzzle makes — buckles, straps, or metal parts. Even dogs familiar with muzzles can be startled by new materials.
To help, start gently:
• Tap the muzzle lightly or move the buckle.
• Pair these sounds with treats or play.
• Gradually increase volume or duration over several sessions.
Move slowly, especially with noise-sensitive dogs, so each sound becomes part of a positive experience.
If your dog avoids the muzzle
If your dog is reluctant, first check that the issue is actually the muzzle. Try training in a different space, observe body language, and ensure your dog feels relaxed in general.
Once you confirm the muzzle is the concern, slow the process down:
- • Place the muzzle on a table or counter and carry on with your daily activities nearby.
- • Bring the muzzle out at mealtime or playtime, keeping it at a distance your dog is comfortable with.
- • For extra-sensitive dogs, consider using a cut-up practice muzzle until confidence improves.
Consistency and patience are key to successful muzzle desensitisation.
