One of the most common questions we hear at The Muzzle Movement is, "Can my dog drink water with a muzzle on?"

The answer is yes! A well-fitting, appropriately designed basket muzzle should allow your dog to drink water comfortably, without needing to remove it.

Whether you're heading out for a walk, enjoying a day at the beach or simply offering your dog a drink at home, it's important that muzzled dogs can access fresh water whenever they need it.

How Do Dogs Drink Whilst Wearing a Muzzle?

Dogs drink water by using their tongues to lap it up. Rather than simply scooping water into their mouths, dogs curl their tongues backwards and move them rapidly to draw water upwards into their mouths.

To do this effectively, dogs need enough space to open their mouths and move their tongues freely. This is one of the reasons why adequate pant room is such an important part of choosing a dog muzzle that allows drinking.

A muzzle that is too shallow or restrictive may prevent a dog from opening their mouth sufficiently, making drinking difficult or even impossible.

The Muzzle Movement dog muzzles are designed with generous pant space, allowing dogs to open their mouths, pant, take treats and drink water. READ MORE

Most dogs are able to drink by simply lowering their heads and submerging the end of their muzzle into their water bowl. Once the water reaches their mouth, they can lap it up through the openings in the muzzle basket.

Basket Muzzles vs Soft Muzzles: Which Lets Dogs Drink?

Not all muzzles are created equal when it comes to drinking. Fabric or soft "sleeve" muzzles work by holding a dog's mouth closed, which means a dog wearing one can't pant properly, can't take treats and can't drink water.

That's why we always recommend a well-fitting basket muzzle for walks, training and any time your dog will be muzzled for more than a few minutes. Being able to pant and drink isn't a bonus feature; it's essential for your dog's comfort and welfare.

My Dog Won't Drink With Their Muzzle On. What Can I Do?

Although many dogs quickly work out how to drink whilst wearing their muzzle, others may need a little time and encouragement to get used to it.

Here are a few things to consider if your dog is finding drinking in their muzzle a little tricky.

Choose a large enough water bowl

One of the most common reasons dogs struggle to drink whilst wearing a muzzle is that their water bowl is simply too small. Remember, your dog's muzzle adds extra width and length to their snout. A bowl that is perfectly suitable without a muzzle may suddenly become difficult to access.

Try offering water in a larger, wider bowl that allows your dog to comfortably lower the end of their muzzle into the water without the basket catching on the sides.

Make sure there is enough water in the bowl for your dog to reach it without having to push their muzzle against the bottom.

Be mindful of bumping the muzzle and loud noises

Some dogs may accidentally knock their muzzle against the side or bottom of their water bowl whilst trying to drink.

Although this might seem insignificant to us, the unfamiliar sound and sensation can be surprising or worrying for some dogs, particularly those who are still building confidence wearing their muzzle.

Metal and ceramic bowls can produce quite noticeable noises when bumped by a muzzle, so you may find that a wider plastic, canvas or silicone bowl is a more comfortable option.

If your dog seems worried, avoid encouraging them to push through their discomfort. Instead, give them time to investigate the bowl, offer positive reinforcement and allow them to approach and drink at their own pace. Practising at home in a familiar environment can help your dog build confidence before needing to drink whilst out and about.

Try different ways of offering water

Not every dog prefers to drink from a traditional water bowl! Some dogs love drinking from a gently running tap, a hose or water poured from a bottle. These can all be options whilst wearing a basket muzzle, provided the water can pass through the openings and reach their mouth.

For dogs who enjoy drinking this way, you can gently pour or trickle water through the front or side of the muzzle, allowing them to lap it up. Always use a gentle flow and allow your dog to choose whether to drink. Avoid directing a forceful stream of water into their mouth or nose.

These methods can be particularly useful when you're out on walks or travelling and don't have access to a suitably sized bowl. However, it's still important to offer your dog opportunities to drink freely from a bowl wherever possible.

Can Dogs Still Drink When Wearing a Scavenger Guard on the Muzzle?

Yes! Dogs can still drink whilst wearing a Muzzle Movement scavenger guard.

Our scavenger guards are designed to provide an additional barrier to help prevent dogs from picking up unwanted items whilst out and about. Because the guard covers openings at the front of the muzzle, dogs may need to adjust how they access their water.

Rather than trying to lap water through the holes in the front of the muzzle, they will generally need to submerge the end of the muzzle and scavenger guard into the water. This allows water to enter the basket through the remaining openings, where they can then lap the water.

A sufficiently large bowl with an adequate water level is particularly important when using a scavenger guard. As with drinking in a muzzle without a guard, it's worth practising at home first to make sure your dog can access water comfortably and confidently.

Practise Drinking as Part of Muzzle Training

As with all aspects of muzzle wearing, a little preparation can make a big difference.

Whilst many dogs naturally work out how to drink with their muzzle on, others may need some practice. Introducing drinking as part of your dog's positive muzzle training can help them become familiar with the experience in a relaxed, low-pressure environment. READ MORE

Start with a large bowl of fresh water and allow your dog to investigate it whilst wearing their muzzle. If they are unsure, don't force the interaction. Give them time, offer encouragement and reward their confidence.

It's particularly important to practise before longer walks, warm weather adventures or situations where your dog may need to wear their muzzle for an extended period.

Always check that your dog is actually able to drink, rather than simply attempting to do so. If they are struggling, remove the muzzle in a safe environment where appropriate so they can access water, and review the fit or drinking setup before trying again.

Keeping Your Muzzled Dog Hydrated: Comfort and Welfare Come First

Access to fresh drinking water is essential for every dog, whether they wear a muzzle or not.

A well-designed basket muzzle should allow dogs to carry out important natural behaviours, including panting and drinking. However, even with a suitable muzzle, it's important to consider the individual dog's needs, the environment and the conditions in which they're wearing it.

During warmer weather or physical activity, dogs may need more frequent opportunities to drink and rest. Remember that being able to drink through a muzzle doesn't eliminate the risks associated with overheating, and dogs should never be expected to exercise beyond their comfort or physical capabilities.

At The Muzzle Movement, we believe that wearing a muzzle shouldn't mean missing out on the things dogs need to live happy, fulfilled lives.

With the right fit, a suitable water bowl and a little practice, your dog can enjoy a refreshing drink whilst keeping their muzzle comfortably in place.
